Red Bull Metro Ride news from Martin Whiteley

September 26, 2007

In the early hours of Sunday morning, while the commuters of Budapest were sound asleep, some of the world’s best mountain bikers took to the subway station in the inaugural Red Bull Metro Ride. World Cup top runners included Gee and Dan Atherton, Nathan Rennie, Chris Kovarik, David Vazquez, Marc Beaumont, Filip Polc and Sam Blenkinsop.
The two rider knock out format took the competitors on a wild 40 second underground ride that included some of the longest escalators in Europe, slippery railway platforms and even, in true Red Bull style, through a staionary Metro train carriage. After qualifying, the riders went head-to-head in a Dual Slalom format.
In qualifying Sam’s team mate, Filip Polc took the top spot with a 41.197, followed by the 2 Athertons and then Sam in 4th with 42.444secs.
In his first heat Sam met local rider Peter Frajczer before meeting Irish Champ Ben Reid. Passing these two rounds he was up against Dual Slalom and 4X powerhouse Michal Marosi (CZE). Despite the difference in strength and size, Sam had the speed on the course to take the win. This took him through to the semi final to meet his faster team mate. A bit of bad luck for Filip meant that Sam went into the final to face Team Animal/Commencal’s Gee Atherton. In the end Gee was too good, keeping it clean and getting faster each run to take the overall win, with Sam taking 2nd and a handy check for 1500 Euros.
“That was pretty intense and a lot of fun. It wasn’t so cool to meet Filip in the semi’s, it would have been better to meet in the final, but I’m happy to get 2nd. The key was just trying to keep it smooth, and hit the escalators at top speed. Wicked fun.” -said Sam shortly before flying home to New Zealand for a welcome break from international racing. The past few weeks have seen excellent results including a 9th place at the World Championships in his first year in the elite ranks.

See what two of the world’s most influential MTB websites had to say about Distilled.

The latest from George Ryan

September 20, 2007

Hey everyone, hope you all had a great summer, I know I did! I just
wanted to give you all a quick run down of what I’ve been up to this
summer before everyone heads off to Vegas next week.

-I did a video interview for G-Rock radio (106.3 New Jersey) at Diablo
Freeride Park. The video is featured on G-Rock radio’s website. Here’s
a link to the video –

-This coming weekend I will be doing a video/photo shoot for Maxim
magazine’s website. I’ll be riding downhill and freeride features at Diablo
Freeride Park.

-Last week I went up to Highland Mountain in New Hampshire to film with
Don Hampton for his next video titled “Latitudes”. We racked up a lot
of great footage and Damian Breach took so many amazing photos. Look
for those soon in Decline Magazine.

-I had regularly been shooting, editing, and riding for videos for
Diablo Freeride Park’s website. Hopefully if you have some free time you
can check them out at –

-I just purchased a video camera and have been getting plenty of
footage, both of myself and others. My goal is to have my own feature video
out sometime next summer. I will also be working on other video
projects, including a ton of web videos in the near future.

-Pro-Tec has been running ads in Decline recently. One full page ad
featured me, and another featured the whole Pro-Tec team.

-Distilled Magazine is new on the block. Their first issue had a
feature interview with yours truly. Their second issue is out now, so if you
would like to check out the interview let me know, I’ll get you hooked

-In July I helped out the guys at Red Bull in Boston during an “Illume”
photo workshop. We cruised around the city in limo’s riding street all
day as part of a photo contest. The photos and story will be featured
in N’East magazine (photo/lifestyle mag) sometime this fall.

So there’s the quick run-down. Also be sure to check my blog on the Cut
website – for more regularly updated stuff from
me.  If anybody needs photos for ads/catalogs/websites/etc., let me
know, I’ll hook you up with a couple photographers that have some great
photos. Anyways, I hope to see everyone next week in Las Vegas. I won’t be
able to make the dirt demo, but I’ll be there for the show. Until

Ride Hard,

Wot, no Hondas?

September 19, 2007

Looks like Honda may not be selling their coveted DH bikes to us poor plebs after all. According to our buddy Teisuke at, Honda couldn’t assure “Honda Quality” outside of Japan and scrapped the idea. They informed Japanese bike dealers by mail.

New Jersey to Nevada

September 17, 2007

They might be on opposite sides of the continent, but Bootleg Canyon and Diablo Freeride Park share at least one thing in common. Pick up a copy of Distilled at the Diablo store or All Mountain Cyclery this week.

MX Fitness

September 14, 2007

Distilled contributor Alan Milway checked in to let us know about his new website, which is dedicated to helping DH and MX athletes reach their potential on race day.

“After some needless neglect, the MX Fitness website has now been completely revamped and updated. I’m back from my summer abroad and back working with the riders. The site is now a very relevant source of fitness training information for both Motocross and Mountain Bike riders.”

We’re constantly adding outlets at which Distilled can be purchased, but if you can’t find it in your area, drop us a line and let us know.
