Nick Beer scores another win at the iXS European Downhill Cup

For the fourth race of the «iXS European Downhill Cup», an approximate number of 300 riders from 12 countries travelled to Ilmenau. This college town has been selected as the venue for the series’ German stop after having hosted last year’s German championships. Being the thirteenth race labeled as «Absolute Abfahrt», the race was the highlight of this event that has become a classic. Despite some heavy rainfalls in the night before the race, the short yet selective course was in an almost perfect condition. Even better, it was drying during the practice runs, offering heaps of traction and allowing insane speeds when it was time for racing.

Saturday’s fastest time was posted by Markus Klausmann (GER – Team Ghost), who pushed Erik Irmisch (GER – Gates Nicolai) into second position. Surprisingly, the third-fastest qualifier was René Schmidt (GER – Alutech). So Sunday’s finals were hard to beat in terms of suspense. Under perfect weather conditions, a few thousand spectators celebrated every single participant, turning the race into a veritable fair especially in the finish area based within the run out of a former ski jump. When the fastest elite riders were blasting down the slope, the fastest times were being improved continuously, so sitting down on the Red Bull Hot Seat was a short-time honour for many. Nick Beer headed into the race as fourth-last starter, posting a best time of exactly 2.00 minutes. Even Klausmann and Irmisch could not clock a time under the seemingly magic two-minute barrier. Two seconds slower than the winner, Klausmann finished in second, pushing Irmisch into third.

In the elite women’s class, Miriam Ruchti (SUI – Sport Promotion) rode to the first place, distancing Harriet Rücknagel (GER – Zonenschein) and Sandra Rübesam (GER – RAD-ART). The junior category was won by John Smith (GBR – Tomac) in a strong time of 2.03min. The second place went to Johannes Sütter (GER – Solid) who kept Harry Heath (GBR – Derryair) at a safe distance. The masters class was won by Wilfred van de Haterd (NED – NOX Cycles).  Apart from the race, the legendary riders’ party also took place in Ilmenau. Hundreds of visitors were partying and dancing to Ska music performed live on stage. Generally, the appeal of the «Absolute Abfahrt» was lying in a very pleasing atmosphere and the perfect organization one has become used to. The finals of the «iXS European Downhill Cup» are scheduled to take place in Leogang, Austria, from 20th to 21st September 2008.
