DVD Review: “Break the Cycle”

December 29, 2009

Break the Cycle presents the sport of downhill from a uniquely Irish perspective. It documents Ireland’s top riders on their favorite local trails and also gives an insight into their lives off the bike. Ben Reid is one obvious name but many of the lesser-known riders also tear it up, such as Belfast’s Colin Ross (who is known to show up at the Irish Championships as his only race of the season and occasionally beat Ben Reid into second), ex-Masters World Champ and old-school World Cup Racer for Animal/Orange Glyn O’Brien and the hugely talented Dan and Gerard Wolfe from south of the border, ensure that this movie is not lacking in talent. The trails and vistas are simply spectacular and for someone from Ireland it was nice to see some local spots looking so good on film. Non-locals will be amazed by the scenery and depth of riding locations available on such a tiny island, and the movie steers clear of the two-dimensional, typical bike movie template by showing us the riders’ everyday lives, whether it’s the fireman training for emergencies or the doctor tending to patients. Definitely one of the more inspired movies this year.

OK Downhill…

…you borrowed the clothing from motocross, now it’s time to take a leaf out of MotoGP’s book for next season. Think of the seconds riders could shave off their times with a little pre-run shade.

Fly MX Gear

December 27, 2009

Fly recently hooked us up with some of their “Kinetic” motocross gear to try out and UK rider Liam Little was on hand to put it through its paces.

“The jersey is very light and comfortable, well vented and the cuffs are not restrictive, like some other MX brands. The pants are quite heavy but have a bit of extra padding in the knees and can take a good scuff on the hard frozen ground. The poppers on the pants are very strong so you avoid any embarrassing moments.  The pants also have a good Velcro strap on the right hand side which give the perfect fit. The lower legs are also the straight cut which I prefer for DH as opposed to the more restrictive, elastic cuffs. The gloves are very comfortable but the Velcro strap is a little short  so does come open  sometimes, but I like that there are no uncomfortable rubber logos over the knuckles which leave you with a very comfortable glove. Although I didn’t get the kit excessively dirty, from the small amount of mud on the kit it seemed to wash very well with no staining of the white, all in all some very impressive gear from a fairly under-represented company in the mountain bike world, so expect to see more of this kit this season, especially with the new 2010 styling. ”
